Self-service check-in kiosks and baggage drop machines will have 86 percent and 76 percent coverage, respec

hina to remain steadfast protecting national security

hina welcomes the United States’ willingness to develop a stable mi

litary-to-military relationship, but will remain steadfast in safeguarding national sove

reignty and security, a senior Chinese military official said on Saturday in Singapore.

In a keynote speech at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue on Saturday morning, acting US

Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said that China and the US can still have a cooperative rela

tionship. Although competition does exist between the two countries, it does not always mean conflict, he added.

Shanahan also noted some “destabilizing activities” in Asia and emphasized the US’s milit

ary presence and commitment in the region. He called for more communication between the US and Chi

nese militaries to settle their differences and build a constructive relationship

utual trust also is growing between China and countr

“Countries from the region have the will, wisdom and capability to manage differences an

d jointly promote peace, thus transforming the area into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation,” he said.

On the Korean Peninsula question, China insists on denuclearizin

“China has consistently, seriously, fully and rigorously implemented the

hile the United Kingdom remains deeply divided over Br

ded over Brexit, most agree that it will shape the future of the United Kingdom for generations to come.

Pro-Europeans fear Brexit will undermine London’s position as one of the world’s top two financial capitals and weake

n the West as it grapples with Donald Trump’s unpredictable US presidency and growing assertiveness from Russia and China.

The Liberal Democrats, who campaigned under the slogan “Bollocks to Brexit”, oppose Brexit and want a second referendum to stop it.

The loss of Britain for the EU is the biggest blow yet to more than 60

years of efforts to forge European unity after two world wars, though the 27 other me

mbers of the bloc have shown surprising unity during the tortuous negotiations.

Man sentenced to death for murder of Shanghai schoolchildren

The man who stabbed and killed two 10-year-old students in Shanghai was senten

ced to death by the Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People’s Court on Thursday.

On the morning of June 28, 2018, Huang Yichuan, a native of Shaoyan

g city, Hunan province, killed two boys near the gate of the Shanghai World Foreign Lan

guage Primary School on Pubei Road in Xuhui district, Shanghai. He also injured another boy and a woman.

The court, which had heard the case on Dec 6, said on Thursday that Hua

ng, who was then 29, committed the crime as he was frustrated by problems at work. He t

raveled to Shanghai on June 6 and bought a kitchen knife at a supermarket on June 12.

Data from the US Census Bureau showed that bilater

eral merchandise trade between the two

countries has declined by more

than 15 percent since September 2018, when the second round of tariffs went into effect.

“This has also impacted global value

chains in East Asia and other trading partners,” the report said.

“We’ve seen the trade tariffs that have

been introduced on both sides have already been damaging trade,” said Dawn Holl

and, chief of the Global Economic

Monitoring Branch in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Holland said the adverse effects of trade tensions on economic growth in China “has been partly offset by some stimulus measures”.

According to the report, growth in China is projected to moderate gradually from 6.6 percent in 2018 to 6.3 percent in 2019, and 6.2 percent in 2020.

Zhang Dawei, chief analyst with Centaline Property, sai

id the main reason behind this is the real estate market in some cities is at risk of going out of control, and the land market shows signs of overheating.

China’s house prices continued to stabilize despite slight increa

ses in April, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Sixty-seven out of the 70 major Chi

nese cities saw an increase in the number of newly built homes that were sold in April.

On a month-on-month basis, new home prices in Dalian and Nanning rose 0.7 percent and 0.9 percent, re

spectively. On a year-on-year basis, new house prices in these cities grew 13.2 percent and 11.5 percent, respectively.

Although excluded from the 70 major Chinese cities surveyed by the N

ational Bureau of Statistics, Foshan and Suzhou also saw a surge in home prices in April.

Many countries along the Belt and Road have high moun

tains, deserts, oceans and a lack of accurate meteorological information. The number o

f meteorological disasters in the regions is more than double the global average, the administration said.

Wei Caiying, deputy general-director of the National Satellite Meteoro

logical Center, said that real-time disaster monitoring by meteorological satellites coul

d provide these countries with a scientific basis for disaster prevention and reduction.

“Weather-related disasters such as typhoons pose a threat to life and property. T

racking their path could help local authorities decide how to proceed with evacuations,” she said.

In addition to real-time monitoring, the China Meteorological Administration set up the Emergency Support Mechanism for int

ernational users of Fengyun satellites last April, which covers disaster prevention and mitigation.

Fertility rates, meanwhile, remain astonishingly high in

n some countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. In a few of the poorest-Niger, Mali and th

e Democratic Republic of Congo-the rate is 6-7 children per woman. The resulting flood of new ent

rants to the labor market is far outstripping the number of jobs available.

Empowering women key to meeting challenge

No known growth model can accommodate or keep up with this k

ind of demographic surge. Even sustained economic growth of around 7 percent per year

won’t be enough. And although fertility tends to decline as incomes rise, that does not happen immediately. Em

powering women, therefore, may be the most effective way of starting to address the challenge.

China has also recently announced a strengthened reg

gime of intellectual property rights protection. Again, this is what foreign negotiat

ors are seeking, but also is important for China’s own economy as it transitions to being a technology leader.

Trade agreements can affect the types of goods being traded and they can redirect trade toward one c

ountry, away from others. They cannot directly affect any country’s worldwide current account bal

ance. A country that saves less than it invests will have to borrow foreign funds to import foreign goods to make up that difference.

There are two ways to reduce the US trade deficit. A serious recession would reduce investme

nt, but nobody advocates that as a strategy. The only other path is to change the US financial and gov

ernment system to encourage increased savings. China has almost nothing to do with it.
